al-Ḥāiyyah by Ibn Abī Dāwūd (D. 316)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

تَمَسَّكْ بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ وَاتَّبِعِ الْهُدَىوَلَا تَكُ بِدْعِيًّا لَعَلَّكَ تُفْلِحُ

Hold fast to Allāh’s rope and follow the guidance … and do not be an innovator that you may succeed.

وَدِنْ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَالسُّنَنِ الَّتِي … أَتَتْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ تَنْجُو وَتَرْبَحُ

And adhere to Allāh’s book and the Sunan that … came from Allāh’s Messenger, you will be saved and profited.

وَقُلْ غَيْرَ مَخْلُوقٍ كَلَامُ مَلِيكِنَابِذَلِكَ دَانَ الْأَتْقِيَاءُ وَأَفْصَحُوا

And say: “The Speech of our King is uncreated” … by that the pious held and proclaimed.

وَلَا تَقُلْ فِي الْقُرْآنِ بِالْوَقْفِ قَائِلًاكَمَا قَالَ أَتْبَاعٌ لِجَهْمٍ وَأَسْجَحُوا

And do not be hesitant regarding the Qur’ān … as the followers of Jahm said and were lenient.

وَلَا تَقُلِ الْقُرْآنُ خَلْقٌ قِرَاءَتُهُفَإِنَّ كَلَامَ اللَّهِ بِاللَّفْظِ يُوضَحُ

And do not say the Qurʾān’s recitation is a creation … for Allāh’s Speech is made clear by the spoken word.

وَقُلْ يَتَجَلَّى اللَّهُ لِلْخَلْقِ جَهْرَةًكَمَا الْبَدْرُ لَا يَخْفَى وَرَبُّكَ أَوْضَحُ

And say: Allāh will manifest Himself to the creation clearly … just as the full moon is not hidden, and your Rabb is (even) clearer.

وَلَيْسَ بِمَوْلُودٍ وَلَيْسَ يُولَدُ … وَلَيْسَ لَهُ شِبْهٌ تَعَالَى الْمُسَبَّحُ

He is not born, nor is He begotten … and there is no similitude to Him, Exalted is the Glorified One.

وَقَدْ يُنْكِرُ الْجَهْمِيُّ هَذَا وَعِنْدَنَابِمِصْدَاقِ مَا قُلْنَا حَدِيثٌ مُصَرَّحُ

The Jahmī may deny this, but with us … is a clear Ḥadīth confirming what we have said.

رَوَاهُ جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَقَالِ مُحَمَّدٍفَقُلْ مِثْلَ مَا قَدْ قالُوا فِي ذَاكَ تَنْجَحُ

Jarīr narrated it from the saying of Muḥammad (ﷺ) … so say what they said regarding that so you will succeed.

وَقَدْ يُنْكِرُ الْجَهْمِيُّ أَيْضًا يَمِينَهُوَكِلْتَا يَدَيْهِ بِالْفَوَاضِلِ تَنْضَحُ

The Jahmī may also deny His Right Hand … while both His Hands pour forth with bounties.

وَقُلْ يَنْزِلُ الْجَبَّارُ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ … بِلَا كَيْفَ جَلَّ الْوَاحِدُ الْمُتَمَدِّحُ

And say: al-Jabbār descends every night … without (us knowing) how, Magnificent is the One, the Praiseworthy.

إِلَى طَبَقِ الدُّنْيَا يَمُنُّ بِفَضْلِهِ … فَتُفْرَجُ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَتُفْتَحُ

To the lowest heaven He bestows His grace … and the gates of the sky are parted and opened.

يَقُولُ: أَلَا مُسْتَغْفِرٌ يَلْقَ غَافِرًا … وَمُسْتَمْناحٌ خَيْرًا وَرِزْقًا فَيُمْنَحُ

He says: “Is there one seeking forgiveness who will find a Forgiver? … And one seeking goodness and provision that he be granted?”

رَوَى ذَاكَ قَوْمٌ لَا يُرَدُّ حَدِيثُهُمْ … أَلَا خَابَ قَوْمٌ كَذَّبُوهُمْ وَقُبِّحُوا

A people whose ḥadīth is not rejected narrated this … indeed, ruined and disgraced are the people who denied them.

وَقُلْ: إِنَّ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ مُحَمَّدٍ … وَزِيرَاهُ قِدْمًا ثُمَّ عُثْمَانُ الْأَرْجَحُ

And say: Indeed, the best of people after Muḥammad (ﷺ) … are his two ministers of old (Abū Bakr & ʿUmar), then ʿUthmān, the most preferred.

وَرَابِعُهُمْ خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ بَعْدَهُمْ … عَلِيٌّ حَلِيفُ الْخَيْرِ بِالْخَيْرِ مُنْجِحُ

And their fourth is the best of creation after them … ʿAlī, the companion of good, successful through goodness.

وَإِنَّهُمُ وَالرَّهْطُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِمُ … عَلَى نُجُبِ الْفِرْدَوْسِ فِي الْخُلْدِ تَسْرَحُ

And they are a group, no doubt about them … upon the noble mounts of Firdaws, they roam freely in eternity.

سَعِيدٌ وَسَعْدٌ وَابْنُ عَوْفٍ وَطَلْحَةُ … وَعَامِرُ فِهْرٍ وَالزُّبَيْرُ الْمُمَدَّحُ

Saʿīd, Saʿd, Ibn ʿAwf, Ṭalḥah … ʿĀmir of Fihr (Abū ʿUbaydah) and al-Zubayr, the praised one.

وَقُلْ خَيْرَ قَوْلٍ فِي الصَّحَابَةِ كُلِّهِمْ … وَلَا تَكُ طَعَّانًا تَعِيبُ وَتَجْرَحُ

And say the best words about all the Companions … and do not be a slanderer who finds fault and criticises.

فَقَدْ نَطَقَ الْوَحْيُ الْمُبِينُ بِفَضْلِهِمْ … وَفِي الْفَتْحِ آيٌ فِي الصَّحَابَةِ تَمْدَحُ

For the clear Revelation has spoken of their virtues … and in (Sūrah) al-Fatḥ there are Ayat praising the Companions.

وَبِالْقَدَرِ الْمَقْدُورِ أَيْقِنْ فَإِنَّهُ … دِعَامَةُ عَقْدِ الدِّينِ، وَالدِّينُ أَفْيَحُ

And have certainty in the decreed Qadar, for it is … a pillar of the creed, and the religion is broad.

وَلَا تُنْكِرَنْ جَهْلًا نَكِيرًا وَمُنْكَرًا … وَلَا الْحَوْضَ وَالْمِيزَانَ إِنَّكَ تُنْصَحُ

And do not ignorantly deny Nakīr and Munkar … nor the Ḥawḍ (Pool) and the Mīzān (Scale), indeed you are being advised.

وَقُلْ: يُخْرِجُ اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ بِفَضْلِهِ … مِنَ النَّارِ أَجْسَادًا مِنَ الْفَحْمِ تُطْرَحُ

And say: Allāh the Great, by His grace, will bring out … bodies from the Fire, cast out (like) charcoal.

عَلَى النَّهَرِ فِي الْفِرْدَوْسِ تَحْيَا بِمَائِهِ … كَحِبَّةِ حَمْلِ السَّيْلِ إِذْ جَاءَ يَطْفَحُ

Upon the river in Firdaws they are revived by its water … like a seed carried by a flood when it comes overflowing.

وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لِلْخَلْقِ شَافِعٌ … وَقُلْ فِي عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ مُوَضَّحُ

And indeed, Allāh’s Messenger will intercede for the creation … and say that the punishment of the grave is an affirmed truth.

وَلَا تُكَفِّرَنْ أَهْلَ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِنْ عَصَوْا … فَكُلُّهُمُ يَعْصِي وَذُو الْعَرْشِ يَصْفَحُ

And claim not the people of prayer as Kafir, even if they sin … for all of them sin, and the Lord of the Throne pardons.

وَلَا تَعْتَقِدْ رَأْيَ الْخَوَارِجِ إِنَّهُ … مَقَالٌ لِمَنْ يَهْوَاهُ يُرْدِي وَيَفْضَحُ

And do not hold the opinion of the Khawārij, for it is … a statement that ruins and disgraces the one who desires it.

وَلَا تَكُ مُرْجِيًّا لَعُوبًا بِدِينِهِ … أَلَا إِنَّمَا الْمُرْجِيُّ بِالدِّينِ يَمْرَحُ

And do not be a Murjiʾī playing his religion … for indeed the Murjiʾī revels with the religion.

وَقُلْ: إِنَّمَا الْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ وَنِيَّةٌ … وَفِعْلٌ عَلَى قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ مُصَرَّحُ

And say: Indeed, Īmān is statement, intention … and action, upon the clear saying of the Prophet.

وَيَنْقُصُ طَوْرًا بِالْمَعَاصِي وَتَارَةً … بِطَاعَتِهِ يَنْمِي وَفِي الْوَزْنِ يَرْجَحُ

And it lessens sometimes by disobedience, and sometimes … through obedience it increases and outweighs in the scale.

وَدَعْ عَنْكَ آرَاءَ الرِّجَالِ وَقَوْلَهُمْ … فَقَوْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَزْكَى وَأَشْرَحُ

And leave opinions of men and their statements … for the statement of Allāh’s Messenger is purer and explanatory.

وَلَا تَكُ مِنْ قَوْمٍ تَلَهَّوْا بِدِينِهِمْ … فَتَطْعَنَ فِي أَهْلِ الْحَدِيثِ وَتَقْدَحُ

And do not be of a people heedless with their religionlest you slander and criticise Ahl al-Ḥadīth.

إِذَا مَا اعْتَقَدْتَ الدَّهْرَ يَا صَاحِ هَذِهِ … فَأَنْتَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ تَبِيتُ وَتُصْبِحُ

If you hold this creed forever, O my companion … then you are upon goodness, night and day.

هَذَا قَوْلِي، وَقَوْلُ أَبِي، وَقَوْلُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، وَقَوْلُ مَنْ أَدْرَكْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ وَمَنْ لَمْ نُدْرِكْ مِمَّنْ بَلَغَنَا عَنْهُ. فَمَنْ قَالَ عَلَى غَيْرِ هَذَا، فَقَدْ كَذَبَ

This is my statement, and the statement of my father, and the statement of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and the statement of those we met from the people of knowledge and those we did not meet from whom (their stance) has reached us. So whoever says other than this, has indeed lied.
