أبو الأشهب قال: كان أبو رجاء يختم بنا في قيام رمضان في كل عشرة أيام [الزهد لأحمد (١٨٣٩) وحلية الأولياء (٢/ ٣٠٦) وطبقات ابن سعد (٩/ ١٣٩) بأسانيد صحاح]
Abū al-Ashhab said: Abū Rajāʾ (D. 107) used to complete the recitation with us in the night prayer of Ramaḍān every ten days. [Al-Zuhd by Aḥmad (1839), Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (2/306), and Ṭabaqāt Ibn Saʿd (9/139) with Ṣaḥīḥ asānīd]
عن أبي مجلز قال: كان يؤم الحي في رمضان وكان يختم في سبع [ابن أبي شيبة (٧٨٨٧ و٨٨١١) وسنده صحيح]
Abū Mijlaz used to lead the neighborhood in prayer during Ramaḍān, and he would complete the recitation in seven (nights). [Ibn Abī Shaybah (7887 & 8811); Isnād Ṣaḥīḥ]
عن علي الأزدي كان يختم القرآن في رمضان كل ليلة وكان ينام ما بين المغرب والعشاء [ابن أبي شيبة (٧٣٨٦) والتهجد لابن أبي الدنيا (٤٢٩) وسنده صحيح]
ʿAlī al-Azdī used to complete the recitation of the Qurʾān in Ramaḍān every night, and he used to sleep between Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ. [Ibn Abī Shaybah (7386) and Al-Tahajjud by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā (429) with Ṣaḥīḥ asānīd]
محمد بن أحمد بن أبي عون وكان يختم القرآن في كل يوم وليلة مرتين [صحيح ابن حبان (٣٥٠)]
Muḥammad bin Aḥmad bin Abī ʿAwn used to complete the recitation of the Qurʾān twice every day and night. [Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (350)]
كان الشافعي يختم القرآن في شهر رمضان ستين مرة كل ذلك في صلاة [آداب الشافعي ومناقبه (ص ٧٤) ومن طريقه ابن عساكر (٥١/ ٣٩٢) وسنده صحيح] والشافعي يقول: كنت أختم في رمضان ستين مرة [حلية الأولياء (٩/ ١٣٤) وسنده صحيح]
Al-Shāfiʿī used to complete the recitation of the Qurʾān sixty times in the month of Ramaḍān, all of that within prayer. [Ādāb al-Shāfiʿī wa Manāqibuh (p. 74) and Ibn ʿAsākir (51/392) with Isnād Ṣaḥīḥ]
and Al-Shāfiʿī said: I used to complete the recitation in Ramaḍān sixty times. [Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (9/134); Isnād Ṣaḥīḥ]
محمد بن علي بن حبيش يقول: صحبت أبا العباس بن عطاء عدة سنين متأدبا بآدابه وكان له كل يوم ختمة وفي كل شهر رمضان في كل يوم وليلة ثلاث ختمات [حلية الأولياء (١٠/ ٣٠٢) وسنده صحيح]
Muḥammad bin ʿAlī bin Ḥubaysh said: I accompanied Abū al-ʿAbbās bin ʿAṭāʾ for several years, learning his manners. He used to have one completion every day, and during the entire month of Ramaḍān, three completions every day and night. [Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (10/302); Isnād Ṣaḥīḥ]
And this is totally possible because in our time there are multiple recordings online of people who have completed the Quran once in just 7 hours.
قال النووي: والاختيار أن ذلك يختلف باختلاف الأشخاص فمن كان يظهر له بدقيق الفكر لطائف ومعارف فليقتصر على قدر ما يحصل له كمال فهم ما يقرؤه وكذا من كان مشغولا بنشر العلم أو غيره من مهمات الدين ومصالح المسلمين العامة فليقتصر على قدر لا يحصل بسببه إخلال بما هو مرصد له وإن لم يكن من هؤلاء المذكورين فليستكثر ما أمكنه من غير خروج إلى حد الملل والهذرمة [التبيان في آداب حملة القرآن (ص ٦١)]
Al-Nawawī said: The preferred view is that this varies according to the individual. Whoever derives subtle meanings and knowledge through deep contemplation, let him limit himself to the amount that allows him to perfectly understand what he reads. Likewise, whoever is busy with spreading knowledge or other important religious duties and general interests of the Muslims, let him limit himself to an amount that does not cause negligence in what he is dedicated to. And if he is not among those mentioned, let him increase as much as possible, without reaching the limit of boredom or rapid, indistinct recitation. [Al-Tibyān fī Ādāb Ḥamlat al-Qurʾān (p. 61)]
