The Consequence of Disobeying Allah’s Messenger ﷺ

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

“And that Day when the wrongdoer will bite his hands and say: ‘Oh, would that I had taken a path with the Messenger!'” [25:27]

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (D. 774) رحمه الله تعالى says that Allah Almighty in this noble verse has informed about the regret of that wrongdoer person who abandoned the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the manifest truth brought by him ﷺ, and chose paths other than the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. On the Day of Resurrection, this day will be very regretful, but on that Day, his regret will not benefit him at all and he will bite his hands with grief and sorrow. Its reason of revelation may be regarding ʿUqbah bin Abī Muʿayṭ or someone else, but in terms of the general ruling, it includes every such wrongdoer who deviates and turns away from obedience and following. Allah Almighty says: “The Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say: ‘How we wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.’ And they will say: ‘Our Rabb, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the path.'” [33:66-67] Thus, every wrongdoer will be extremely regretful on the Day of Resurrection and will bite his hands saying: “Oh, would that I had taken a path with the messenger. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had never taken so-and-so as a close friend” [Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr vol. 3, p. 594-595]

The path that provides salvation from the punishment of Allah Almighty is the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ alone, as Imām Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310) رحمه الله has explicitly mentioned. [See Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī vol. 8, p. 105]

Meaning, whoever abandoned the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and adopted any other path, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be a wrongdoer and will bite his hands due to grief and sorrow.

O you who believe! When you hold secret counsel, do it not for sin and wrong-doing, and disobedience towards the Messenger but do it for righteousness and Taqwa; and fear Allah unto Whom you shall be gathered. [58:9]
