The command to listen during the Khutbah

[13] And with the same chain of narration that Allah’s Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam) said, “When the Imam is delivering the Khutbah (of Jumah), and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.”

Transmitted by Nasa’i in al-Mujtaba (3/188 hadith no.1578) from the hadith of Abdurahman Ibnul Qasim from Mailk and Abu Dawud (no.1112) from the hadith of Malik, narrated in Bukhari (no.934) and Muslim (no.851) from the hadith of Ibn Shihab.

[UNDERSTANDING FROM THE HADITH]
1) It is not allowed for the congregation to talk to each other during the Khutbah (of jumuah), however talking to the Imam about an important issue is permissible which is established from other evidences.

2) A person who arrives during the khutbah must pray two rakahs. Sahih Bukhari (no.1166, no.930, no.931) and Sahih Muslim (no.875)

3) According to Hakam Ibn Utaybah and Hamad Ibn Sulayman, after the Khatib has arrived it is allowed to say Salam and respond to it, and say to Alhamdulliah when one sneezes and the supplication thereafter (i.e. YarhamukAllah). (Musanaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/120) hadith (no.5260) and its chain is authentic)

4) And according to the statement of Ibrahim Nakha’i, it is also permissible not to respond to the Salam. (Musanaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/121) hadith (no.5268) and its chain is authentic)

5) For more details see hadith (no.333) (of this book)
