It is Prohibited to Fast on the Days of Eid and If Eid is on the Same Day of Jumah Then it is Optional to Pray Jumah

Abu Ubayd Mawla Ibn Azhar: Two Hadith

[73] from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Ubayd, the mawla of Ibn Azhar said, “I was present at an Eid with Umar Ibn al-Khatab (Radi Allahu Anhu). He prayed, and then after he had prayed he gave a Khutba to the people and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) forbade fasting on these two days – the day you break your fast (after Ramadan), and the day you eat from your sacrifice (after Hajj) .’ ”

Abu Ubayd continued,”Then I was present at an Eid with Uthman Ibn Afan. He came and prayed, and when he had finished he gave a Khutba and said, ‘Two Eids have been joined together for you on this day of yours. If any of the people of al-Aliya (the hills outlying Madinah) want to wait for the Jumah they can do so, and if any of them want to return, I have given them permission.’ Abu Ubayd continued, “Then I was present at an Eid with AIi Ibn Abu Talib (Radi Allahu Anhu( (at the time when Uthman (Radi Allahu Anhu) was being detained). He came and prayed, and then after he had prayed he gave a Khutba.”

Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri clarified hearing (this hadith from Abu Ubayd Mawla Ibn Azhar) in Bukhari (no.5571)

[REFERENCES] – [AGREED UPON]

Al-Muwatta (Yahya’s narration 1/178 hadith no.431, book 10, chapter 2, hadith no.5), at-Tamhid (10/239), al-Istidhkar: (no.401)

Transmitted by Bukhari (no.1990) and Muslim (no.1137) from the hadith of Malik.

[UNDERSTANDING FROM THE HADITH]

1) It is the Sunnah to do the Khutbah after the Eid Salah therefore you should not do the Khutbah before the Eid Salah.

2) The Khulafah Rashidin Radi Allahu Anhu were following in the footsteps of the noble Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)

3) The Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) prayed the Eid Salah before the Khutbah. This understanding from the narration is also reported from the following companions Radi Allahu Anhum:

Abdullah Ibn Abas (Sahih Muslim 2/884 [no.2045] also see Sahih Bukhari no.977), Jabir Ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (Sahih Bukhari no.961, and Sahih Muslim no.885), Abdullah Ibn Umar (Sahih Bukhari no.957, Sahih Muslim no.888), Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Sahih Bukhari no.956, Sahih Muslim no.889), Bara’a Ibn Azib (Sahih Bukhari no.983, and Sahih Muslim no.1961 [no.5075], Anas Ibn Malik (Sahih Bukhari no.984, Sahih Muslim no.1962 [no.5080]), Jundub (Sahih Bukhari no.985, Sahih Muslim no.1960 [no.5067]) Radi Allahu Anhum.

From this it is known that the hadith is mutawatir, even then there were some people who used to give the Khutbah before the Eid Salah. This action of those people is false because it goes against the authentic Ahadith.

4) If Jumah and Eid is on the same day then there is an option to either pray the Jumuah or the Dhuhr Salah. Ayas Ibn Abu Ramlah says that I was present with Mu’awiyah Ibn Abi Sufyan Radi Allahu Anhuma and he was asking Zayd Ibn Arqam if in his presence in the lifetime of the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) there were two Eids (Jumah and Eid) on one day? He replied, “Yes”. Mu’awiyah then asked, “Then what did you do?. He said, “ (The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) prayed the Eid prayer then gave a concession for the Jumah prayer and said, “Whoever wants to pray (the Jumah) then (he can) pray (it)”. (Sunan Abu Dawud no.1070, and its chain is [Hasan] good, Sunan an-Nasa’i no.1592, Sunan Ibn Majah no.1310)

Remember that praying Dhuhr (if Jumah is not prayed) is Fardh just as it is in the normal days. Therefore some people who say that, when Eid and Jumah is on the same day then there is a choice in praying or not praying the Dhuhr prayer, is incorrect.

5) Jumah and Eid on the same day is a gathering of two Eids and is a cause for more happiness. It is from ignorance and innovation in the religion to think that it is not blessed.
