Reciting Surah at-Tur in the Magrib Prayer

Muhamad Ibn Jubayr: One Hadith

[69] From Malik from Ibn Shihab from Muhamad Ibn Jubayr Ibn Mutim that his father said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) recite at-Tur (Sura 52) in the Magrib prayer.”

[GRADING] – [SAHIH]

Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri clarified hearing (this hadith from Muhamad Ibn Jubayr) in Ibn Khuzaimah (1/258, 259 hadith no.514)

[REFERENCES] – [AGREED UPON]

Al-Muwatta (Yahya’s narration 1/78 hadith no.168, book 3, chapter 5, hadith no.23), at-Tamhid (9/145), al-Istidhkar: (no.148)

Transmitted by Bukhari (no.765) and Muslim (no.463) from the hadith of Malik

[UNDERSTANDING FROM THE HADITH]

1) It is established (that the Prophet Sallalaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) recited Surah at Tur and Surah Mursalat in the Magrib prayer. See hadith no.49

2) It is narrated from Abu Abdullah as-Suna Nakhi that, “I came to Madinah during the time of Abu Bakr’s Caliphate and I prayed the Magrib behind him. He recited Surah Fatihah and the short mufasil (detailed) Surahs in the first two rak’ats then in the third rak’at he recited Surah Fatihha and one ayah, “Our Rabb, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (al-Muwatta 1/79 hadith no.170, and its chain is authentic)

From this truthful’s athar there are two issues that are known:

First: Surah Fatihah should be prayed in every rak’ah therefore those who say “if nothing is recited in the last two rak’ahs then the salah is valid” then this saying is false.

Two: Apart from reciting Surah Fatihah it is allowed to recite from the Quran in the third (or fourth) rak’ah

3) A summary of Ibn Umar’s athar is that (in the prayers that have four rak’ah) in the four rak’ahs he prayed Surah Fatihah and one Surah and sometimes he prayed two or three Surahs in one rak’a. (see al-Muwatta 1/79 hadith no.171, and its chain is authentic)

4) In some chains of this narration when Jubayr Ibn Mut’im heard the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) recite Surah Tur in Maghrib prayer then at that time he wasn’t a muslim.

From this the scholars have been able to extract the issue that if a non muslim becomes a muslim then he can say narrations whilst he is a muslim and they will be accepted on the condition that this narrator is trustworthy during his time in Islam. (whilst he is a muslim).

5) This is also a refutation of those who say that the time for Maghrib Salah is very small and only small Surahs can be recited.
