The Explanation Of Keeping A Pet Dog

ash-Shaikh al-Imam al-Alim Qadhi ul-Qudha Shamsudin Abu Muhamad Abdullah Ibn Muhamad Ibn Ata Ibn Hasan al-Hanafi informed us, it was read to him and i heard it in the year 667 Hijri, and Abul Abas Ibn Alan, and Abul Abas Ibn Shayban, they said Abu Ali Hanbal Ibn Abdillah Ibn al-Faraj ar-Rasafi informed us, it was read to him, Abul Qasim Hibatullah Ibn Muhamad Ibn Abdilwahid Ibn al-Husain ash-Shaybani informed us, Abu Ali al-Hasan Ibn Ali Ibn Muhamad Ibn al-Mudh-hib at-Tamimi informd us, Abu Bakr Ahmad Ibn Ja’far Ibn Hamdan Ibn Malik al-Qati’i informed us, Abu Abdirahman Abdullah Ibn al-Imam Abi Abdillah Ahmad Ibn Muhamad Ibn Hanbal ash-Shaybani may Allah be pleased with him narrated to us, Abi Ahmad Ibn Muhamad narrated to me, Sufyan narrated to me, from Abdillah Ibn Dinar, I heard [Ibn]*[1] Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu), he said, the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said,

“Whoever keeps a (pet) dog which is neither a watch dog nor a hunting dog, will get a daily deduction of two Qirat from his good deeds.”

[Ibn Abdida’im informed us, Ibn Kulaib narrated to us, Ibn Bayan informed us, Ibn Makhlad informed us, as-Safar narrated to us, Ibn Urfah narrated to us, Marwan Ibn Mua’wiyah al-Fazari from Umar Ibn Hamzah al-Umri, Salim Ibn Abdillah informed us from Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu) then he mentioned the hadith]

He was born in the year 595 Hijri. And he died in the month of Jamadil Ula in the year 683 Hijri

*[1] from the manuscript

Ibn Taymiyah narrated this hadith through the chain of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal and this is present in Musnad Ahmad (2/37 hadith no.4944). (Also see Juz Hasan Ibn Urfah no.58)

Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah clarified hearing this hadith in Musnad Humaydi (no.633). Additionally, Bukhari (no.5480) and Muslim (no.1574) and other than them have narrated it through the chain of Abdullah Ibn Dinar. (Dhahabi narrated it from Ibn Taymiyah in Muthaqa Juz Ibn Urfah no.7)

1. There is an additional type of dog a person is allowed to keep which is mentioned in the Marfu hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (Radi Allahu Anhu) which mentions ‘…except for a dog used in guarding livestock…’ (Sahih Bukhari no.2322, Sahih Muslim no.1575)

Therefore it is established that one is permitted to keep a dog for 3 reasons only:

1) A hunting dog

2) A watch dog

3) A dog used in guarding livestock

2. It is haram to keep a fighting dog or for dog baiting (dog fighting)

3. There is a type of hunting dog that can smell the scent of thieves etc. and help track them down. From the hadith above it is also allowed to keep this type of dog. And Allah knows best.

4. The additional wording of a reliable narrator is classified as being credible and accepted.

5. It is written “I heard Umar” in the original manuscript however this is incorrect, which has been corrected by Musnad Ahmad – wal-Hamdullilah [in the manuscript the words ‘May Allah be pleased with him’ are not present]
