The Trunk Of A Date Palm Tree Crying Due To It’s Love Of The Messenger Of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)
al-Musnad al-Asil al-Adl Majdudin Abu Abdillah Muhamad Ibn Isma’il Ibn Uthman Ibn al-Mudhafar Ibn Hibatillah Ibn Asakir ad-Dimashqi informed us, it was read to him and i heard it in the month of Sha’ban in the year 667 Hijri, and al-Hafidh Abu Muhamad al-Qasim Ibn Ali Ibn al-Hasan Ibn Hibatillah Ibn Asakir informed us, it was read to him, and Abu ad-Duriyaqut Ibn Abdillah ar-Rumi at-Tajir Mawla Ibn al-Bukhari informed us, it was read to him, and Zaynab Bint Makki and Isma’il Ibn al-Asqalani informed us, they both said, Ibn Tabarzad informed us, al-Qadhi Abu Bakr al-Ansari and Abu Bakr Ahmad Ibn al-Ashqar ad-Dalal and Abu Ghalib Muhamad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Quraish and Abu Bakr Ahmad Ibn Dahruj informed us,and they all said*, Abu Muhamad Abdullah Ibn Muhamad Ibn Abdillah Ibn Hazar Mardasarifini informed us, it was read to him, Abu Tahir Muhamad Ibn Abdirahman Ibn al-Abbas al-Mukhalis narrated to us, and dictated it in the month of Sha’ban in the year 393 Hijri, Abul Qasim Abdullah Ibn Muhamad al-Bagawi narrated to us, Shayban Ibn Farukh narrated to us, Mubarak Ibn Fadalah narrated to us, al-Hasan narrated to us, from Anas (Ibn Malik) (Radi Allahu Anhu), he said,
The Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) used to deliver his sermons on Friday while standing with his back on a trunk of a date palm. When there were more people he (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, “Make a pulpit for me which has two steps.” Then when he stood on the pulpit the piece of wood (meaning the trunk of the date palm) started crying.
Anas (Radi Allahu Anhu) then said, I was in the Masjid and i heard the piece of wood cry as one would for someone who he loved overwhelmingly. then (the piece of wood) carried on crying, until he (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) got up and hugged it so it went quiet (and stopped crying).
Hasan (Basri) said when he narrated this hadith he used to cry, then he said, O Allah’s people! The reason why the trunk passionately cried was because of the high status that the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) had with Allah. Therefore it is more necessary for you to have the desire in meeting the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam).
He was born in the year 587 Hijri. And he died in the month of Dhul Qa’dah in the year 699 Hijri
[GRADING AND REFERENCES] – [IT’S CHAIN IS [DA’IF] WEAK]
Ibn Taymiyyah narrated this hadith through the chain of Abu Tahir al-Mukhalis and this is in al-Mukhlasiyat. (vol.2, pg.76-77, hadith no.1057)
Also Ibn Khuzaimah (no.1776), Ibn Hiban (al-Ihsan no.6473 / 6507) and Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (3/226) and other than them have narrated it through the chain of Mubarak Ibn Fadalah.
The reason why this chain is graded weak is because Hasan Basri was a Mudalis of (the 2nd category) and he has said An in this chain. (For his tadlis see Taqrib at-Tahdhib no.1227, Tabaqatul Mudalisin 40/2, and Kashful Astar 1/430 hadith no.908 etc. Remember that the narrations of Hasan Basri from Samurah Ibn Jundub (Radi Allahu Anhu) are all authentic whether there is clarity of him hearing or not. See my book Nayl ul-Maqsud no.354, Also those narrations that Hasan Basri narrates from Jabir (Radi Allahu Anhu) with Anana are authentic. See al-Marasil of Ibn Abi Hatim pg. 27, and the narration from the book is authentic)
Note (1) : The trunk of the date palm tree crying is established from authentic ahadith. (See Sahih Bukhari no.3583, Sahih Muslim no.544, Sunan Tirmidhi no.505, no.3627 and Sunan Ibn Majah no.1415, etc.)
Note (2) : The saying of Hasan Basri is established from a Hasan Lithatihi chain. Wal-Hamdullilah
There is a miracle of the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) mentioned in a hadith that is in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and other than them. It mentions that the date palm tree cried out after it was cut.
It is obligatory upon every muslim that they have a tremendous amount of love for the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), they should act on his ahadith, they should be ready to sacrifice their life and wealth for him and by doing so will achieve true salvation in the hereafter. Insha Allah
